Hong Kong ranked bottom among Asian cities in a recent survey on the list of happiest places to live on earth. This shows that money can't buy happiness. Mainland China is better than Hong Kong in many aspects: things are cheaper, better quality, people are more mannered. A signature dish of Yangchow fried rice that comes with soup, chinese tea, waiter service, in an upscale restaurant in southern China would cost only 8 RMB, while the same dish just to take away in a Hong Kong restaurant would cost minimum 20 HKD. A tube of Colgate-Palmolive toothpaste (90g) would retail regularly for 2.50 RMB in southern China, versus 9.90 HKD if you buy the same brand-size in Hong Kong. What a big difference in price! The internet bar in southern China charges 3 RMB for 1 hour usage on the internet, where else can you find such bargain? In some parts of southern China, motorcycles are licensed by the government to carry passenger for a fee. Those motorcycle drivers wear a green jacket printed with 2 big numbers on the back of the jacket. The 1st no. is a 4-digit no. that uniquely id the driver and motorcycle, underneath that no. is a 2nd no., a complaint hotline no. for people to call. Noone complained, the service is cheap, fast, safe, efficient, you hail them on the street, or in my case, they come up to me when they saw me waiting, you tell the motorcycle driver where to go, hop onto the back seat, off you go, you pay the driver when you reach your destination. The public loves it. US, HK do not have motorcycle as a means of public transportation. Wherever US businesses operate (there are already too many 7-11 stores in Hong Kong), local businesses got forced out, prices tend to escalate too, not good for local people. back | main
