The sixth Royal Navy Penelope was Launched in 1867 at Pembroke a 4,470-ton corvette, and was the Navy's first Ironclad of any size to be fitted with twin screws. In 1897 she was used as a floating naval prison in Simonstown. She was sold in 1912.

Built at Thames Iron Works, Blackwall, and launched 16th November 1875. The vessel had been ordered by the Turkish Government, and would be named Hamidieh, but due to a Russian War scare, she was purchased by the Royal Navy on 20th February 1878, and modified to Admiralty requirements. Named HMS Superb, an Iron Armour Plated ship, screw, 9710 tons.
