---------------(Insights on an exploratory visit to SPCM by Chelo Borromeo Gemina, Joy Yuzon and Dr. Sharon)
From the desk of Dr. Sharon Reyes:
last tuesday, chelo, joy and i met with mrs. fortes (our P.E. teacher then who is now teaching at the college dept) before we were called to the office of sis. suzette bautista, spcm president. i was so glad to see joy and chelo again after all those years. mrs. fortes was giving us options on ways on how to prepare for our homecoming in 2006. she said that scholarship grants would greatly help..... sis suzette was a very nice, energetic and dynamic person. she showed us to her office which still bears the old marron floor tiles of st. paul. she discussed with us several possibilities and means on how to help/sponsor something/somebody at st. paul. she will be renovating the old building where the chapel is with the great, historical stairs and the library beneath it. she looks forward to transforming that library into a museum of all sorts relating to st. paul. a lot of details/ visions were entertained and the three of us were brainstorming with her. im sure chelo/joy will give you in-depth details.... sis suzette later "toured" us to the school grounds. wow, suddenly we felt like in highschool --- same familiar grounds where we used to have our CAT classes, girls loitering in the campus during breaktimes...... the classrooms on the ground floor where we used to hold our classes during 2nd year were turned into a computer center. suddenly i asked joy where could "anicia (insiang) santos" could be, she was a real hit back in 2nd year highschool! also belay lontok and cherry orosa. anyway, sis suzette has shown us an area at the end of our 2nd yr classrooms which is now a bakery named, PAN PAULA BAKERY! they have bakers and are selling good and inexpensive breads. this area used to be where the sisters make "sampay" their underwears, and i remember insiang pulling those underwears from the "sampayan" hehehehe did you know that spcm has a hotel of its own? we were amazed to see that. they call it HRM Training Center, which is of course for their HRM students as part of their training. the "hotel" is a 4-flr building with a ballroom, swimming pool, jacuzzi, suites, coffee shop, physical fitness room, large kitchen, seminar room, etc. it can hold up to 300 guests. some rooms and the pool are still under renovation but sister is planning to open it to the public come january. we could even use that for our homecoming! chelo gave us some assignments as regards the proposed projects of our batch. we will update you every now and then. i see this is a good start for all of us come 2006! i'll update you with the works of sis. eva next time. i will also send you old pictures in highschool. pictures during our retreats, CAT, cheerdancing, songfest, etc! wow, these pictures are a "must-see"!
----------------From the desk of Joy Yuzon:
Dear Gorgeous Ladies of SPCM Batch 81'
I apologize for the delay in writing up a report on our September 17 meeting with Sr. Hilaria.
Here goes: Funding a scholarship program is one alternative our batch has. We have to pool money (i.e. contributions) for finance this. It seems like Sr. Hilaria's pet project is the museum-chapel project. This entails renovating, repairing and restoring the chapel-cum-heritage building that will house the collection of SPCM memorabilia. Stained glass windows will have to be replaced for instance. SPCM now has a collection of old plates, machines, yearbooks, the like. Sr. Hilaria proposed that the heritage building will house the museum proper (academic and memorabilia purposes) and an exhibit area. As regards the latter, Chelo suggested that SPCM rent out the exhibit area to outsiders for income-generating purposes. Her bottomline is that she wants to offer something tangible to the SPCM alumna in return for the support the school gets from its graduates. I suppose she wants to avoid making all these fundraising activities seem like a cash cow. She invited us to the alumni meeting on December 7, 2 p.m. This will give us a feel of how alumni projects go and how alumni groups have organized themselves. We were given a tour of SPCM. So much has changed!
The campus no longer houses the high school department. Classrooms are now airconditioned. Remember the portion of the high school department on the ground floor beside the chapel? Remember how dark and spooky it used to be? Now, it's better lit and has more greenery. Sharon remembered Insiang and the little nun who used to water the plants. The hotel and restaurant department has its own hotel/restaurant training lab. with a real elevator to boot. It rents out rooms and function rooms and also has a restaurant-bar. It even has its own spa facilities and swimming pool apart from the college pool. Too bad, construction wasn't very good (leaks, termite problems). The whole complex is undergoing some overhaul. But the rooms have really cool furnishings. The presidential suite even has a jacuzzi! We were able to talk to Mrs. Patria Fortes and reminisce about our era (a gentle one, I must add). She hasn't aged at all. In fact, feeling ko nga we were caught in a time warp. She said there are more male professors now. I hope they're not as dorky looking as Mr. Skip Lucero and as gangly as Mr. Jarabe (with the semi-afro hair). Sr. Hilaria wants to have an alumni card like that of De La Salle University. The cardholder will be entitled to discounts in restaurants and retail stores. She takes pride in the fact that the nursing department is still its flagship department and that it has a 100% passing rate in the board exams. We weren't able to see the auditorium but we were told that it already has airconditioning.
By the way, SPCM also has an outreach program right within the campus. It put up a bakery. As the kitchen facilities of the hotel are idle at night, they thought it best to train people in baking. The pan de sal it bakes day in and day out has become well known in the community. The money that it raises will finance the night school it will eventually put up. The trainees' children help out in making the brown supots for the pan de sal and are paid in the process.
We may be able to start some kind of fundraising now. The seed money may be used to jumpstart the project our batch will undertake. I suggest that we incorporate our alumni group as a foundation - complete with officers, board of trustees - to give it a semblance of a enterprise with a socio-civic Paulinian spirit. This will also set up a system of accountability to our batchmates and an accounting mechanism as regards the money it will raise.
Chelo and Sharon, please feel free to add to this report.
This is all for now.
---------------Take care and keep in touch!
