6)   Ottawa District Badminton Association 2008 Ontario Winter Games Team Selection Criteria

Ottawa District Badminton Association
2008 Ontario Winter Games Team
Selection Criteria

I.          THE ODBA OWG TEAM

The ODBA will select the top 5 girls and 5 boys to represent the District at the Games, plus 1 boy and 1 girl alternate to train with the team and to substitute for a team member in case of illness/injury prior to the Games.   The team will travel to Collingwood/Owen Sound and will take part in one of the most exciting, fun and prestigious junior badminton events in Ontario from March 6-9, 2008!  We look forward to building a strong team of talented and enthusiastic players, who will proudly represent the Ottawa District at the Games.

II.         THE ODBA OWG TEAM SELECTION

A. The Selection Tournament
The team will be selected based on the results from the Selection Tournament held Saturday-Sunday, December 22-23, 2007.  The tournament will be a “ranking style” tournament, which will use either a knock-out format or a round-robin with a series of playoffs allowing for enough matches to be played to provide an accurate ranking for each player in each event that he/she plays in.  Participants MUST enter a minimum of 2 events.  The final format for each event will be based on registration numbers.

For example an 8 player/team ranking draw with a double knock-out format would look like this

Page 1 http://ca.geocities.com/rmg0450/8teamdkpage1.gif

Page 2 http://ca.geocities.com/rmg0450/8teamdkpage2.gif

Page 3 http://ca.geocities.com/rmg0450/8teamdkpage3.gif

B. Ranking
In singles 1 point will be awarded for the first place finisher, 2 points for the second place, etc.  In doubles and mixed doubles, players will play with their chosen partners, or partners that have been found for them in the case of “partner request”.  The winning  pair will receive 1 “team” point each; the second place pair will earn 2 “team” points each, etc.  All players will be ranked from first to last in each event.

C. Possibility of “Secondary Selection” to assign individual Doubles and Mixed Doubles Points
Depending on participation numbers and time availability, the top 8-12 players of each gender, based on the lowest point total in their TWO best events, may be asked to play in a type of round-robin format, involving single 21 point games, to judge their ability to play with a variety of doubles and mixed partners.  In this case “individual” doubles/mixed doubles points will be awarded to each player.

D. Final Team Selection
The 5 girls and 5 boys with the lowest point total in their TWO best events will be selected for the ODBA OWG team.  For doubles and mixed points, this would consist of the lower of  either the  “team” points or the “individual points” awarded as described in Section C above, should this secondary selection format be used.

The boy and girl with the next lowest point total will be selected for the 6th spot on the team (alternates).

In case of a “tie” for the 6th spot, a head-to-head singles match will be played.

E. Seeding
Seeding for the tournament will be done using the ODBA Junior Ranking System as well as the OBA Junior Rankings.

III.        APPEALS POLICY

i)  Sickness/Injury

The ODBA OWG Committee expects that all District players who are eligible and interested to try-out for the ODBA OWG team will submit an entry form for the OWG Team Selection Tournament.  If an entry form has not been submitted prior to the start of the Team Selection Tournament, this Sickness/Injury Policy will not apply.

In the case of injury/sickness which prevents a player from attending or completing play at the Selection Tournament, a special exception may be made, to allow the player a fair chance to try out for the team.  The player must submit proof of illness/injury and a description of her/his anticipated performance at the Selection Tournament had he/she not been injured or ill, to the ODBA OWG Committee, (c/o Dominique Guertin, Chair, ODBA OWG Committee, drguertin@videotron.ca), within 48 hours after the tournament.  Should this be accepted, a decision will be made by the ODBA OWG Committee as to what actions will be taken to allow a fair chance for the player to try out for the team.  A period of no longer than 2 weeks after the completion of the Selection Tournament will be permitted for this injury/sickness-related try out to be completed.

ii) Failure to follow the stated selection procedures

The ODBA OWG Committee will decide whether to hear an appeal based on a claim that

·         ·         The selection procedure was not followed;  and

·         ·         The player(s) appealing would have been selected for the team or as an alternate, had the proper procedure been followed.

An appeal, with relevant information to address the above criteria, must be received within 48 hours after the announcement of the names of the team members and must be addressed to the ODBA OWG Committee.  The ODBA OWG Committee will decide within 5 days whether the appeal will be heard, based on the above criteria.

In the case that the appeal is heard and the player wins the appeal, a decision will be made by the ODBA OWG Committee as to what actions will be taken to reach a resolution.

 1)  General Information on the Badminton Competition at the 2008 Ontario Winter Games (posted November 20, 2007)

ONTARIO WINTER GAMES 2008

BADMINTON TEAM COMPETITION

OWEN SOUND COLLEGIATE AND VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE

MARCH 6 TO 9, 2008

GENERAL INFORMATION

ONTARIO WINTER GAMES 2008

The Ontario Winter Games have been held in various communities across the province, usually every second year, since 1970, providing sports competition for youth between the ages of 11 and 22 (depending on the sport). The 2008 Ontario Winter Games will involve approximately 3500 participants (athletes, coaches, and officials) from across the province. Collingwood and surrounding communities will provide venues for men’s and ladies hockey, alpine skiing, badminton, fencing, weightlifting, judo, squash, biathlon, boxing, curling, freestyle skiing, ringette, x-country skiing, speed skating, shooting, diving, figure skating, 5 pin bowling, gymnastics, synchronized swimming, table tennis, and wrestling.

FORMAT OF THE BADMINTON COMPETITION

The badminton completion will be held at Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Owen Sound, Ontario.  It is a team competition involving the top Junior-age players in each of the six Districts of the Ontario Badminton Association (OBA) -Toronto, Ottawa, Central Ontario, Northern Ontario, Western Ontario, and Georgian Bay.  Each team consists of 5 girls and 5 boys, selected in tryouts organized by each District.  The Toronto and District Badminton Association will be sending two teams. The event is organized by the OBA.

During the round-robin portion of the event, which will take place on Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8, each team will play a “tie” against each of the other six teams.  Each “tie” consists of two girls singles, two boys singles, 2 boys doubles, 2 girls doubles matches and one mixed doubles match.  The team winning 5 or more matches wins the tie.  The top 4 teams in the round-robin portion, will play off on Sunday March 9, for gold, silver and bronze medals and 4th place, while the remaining three teams will play off for 5th, 6th and 7th place.  All ten players must play in every tie.

In a team event, the players and pairings for the matches from one tie to the next, will be assigned taking into account the strengths and weaknesses shown in previous ties, in order to maximize the Team’s chances of success.  Assignments to singles and doubles matches may therefore vary significantly from usual assignments in team practices.

Feathered shuttles will be used and matches will consist of the best of three 21-point rally point games.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

 ALTERNATES

In addition to the 5 girls and 5 boys who will form the ODBA team, one alternate of each gender will be selected to train with the team.  These alternates will not travel to the OWG, unless one of the other players is injured before the Team departs for the Games or is otherwise unable to attend the event. In this case the alternate will attend the Games as a substitute.

Protective Eyewear

As per OBA policy, athletes must wear protective eyewear that meets the ASTM F803 standard whenever there are more than two players on the court, during the competition and warm ups. Ordinary prescription eyewear is not acceptable.

Meals

Meals and accommodation at the Games are paid for by the Collingwood Winter Games Organizing Committee.  Players will be responsible for their own meals during the trip to the Owen Sound and back, but the ODBA will provide snacks between meals at the competition.

The OBA provides travel subsidies to the OWG, but each District must organize its own travel arrangements to the OWG.  In the past the ODBA has relied on parents and/or coaches/mangers to transport the players in personal or rental vehicles, for which reimbursement was offered.  The team will travel to Owen Sound on Thursday March 6, 2008, leaving in the morning and arriving in time to take part in the Opening Ceremonies which will be held in Collingwood later in the day.  The team will leave Owen Sound on Sunday afternoon March 9 and arrive back in Ottawa in the evening.

Uniforms

For at least the last 4 OWGs team uniforms have been provided at no cost to the team members. This is contingent to some extent on the success of various fund raising initiatives.

Fund Raising

Apart from the OBA travel subsidies and meal and accommodation items mentioned above, all other team costs must be funded locally by the ODBA and interested supporters in the District. For this reason, the ODBA and the OWG team undertakes various fund raising efforts, such as the Tournament at Casselman, November 3-4, 2007, and invites Member Clubs and other groups and individuals within the District to consider providing some assistance.  Any support is most welcome.
