REGISTERING A DOMAIN

FOR BUSINESSES
**********************

STEP 1: REGISTER A DOMAIN (DOT COM) NAME
Free web hosting web sites are great for personal pages or if you want to brag about having your own website. But if you want a website that will last(as long as you pay the monthly or yearly fees), and make money from, you should register your own domain name (mysitename.com). You are restricted when you use a free hosting site when it comes to building, designing your website and marketing, you have not nearly as much freedom as when you have your own domain name.
On free web hosting site, you have limited amount of space for your pages and on some free web hosting sites, you may not be able to add extras or functionality (such as order forms, chat rooms, on-line gaming, etc.) You have no quarantee that your site will be around the next day should the company decide to fold or the free web hosting site decides to start charging a fee for you use it. Can you imagine going to your website that you spent hours designing and fixing up, to go to that site one day..to find it Not Available!
Another major downfall to free web hosting sites is that you may have to put up with annoying pop-ups and banners on your pages. Since the service is free, the support is usually very poor.

STEP 2: PICKING A DOMAIN NAME

A domain name simply is the address of your site and ends in .com, .net, .org, .info, .us, .biz, .tv and others. To keep it simple I will refer to the domain name as the "dot com name" or domain.
To help you get started, I have included a page to help you select a web host for your domain, REGISTERING. I highly suggest that you read the rest of the page before you sign up for a domain name and or site.
It is recommend that you register a domain name with your major KEYWORDS instead of your company name. Using your keywords helps your company to be found in the major search engines (GOOGLE, YAHOO,  MSN, etc.)!
The average person who surfs the internet searches for subject, and in the minority of time, they search for name of a company. The major exception to this is if they are searching for a major brand name like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, etc. Again, choose a name that includes KEYWORDS that your target audience would likely use when they search for a topic or website.
You can still list your company name on your web pages, but if you want to receive traffic from all over, make sure the domain name includes your important "SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY" KEYWORDS
But for every rule there is an exceptions...

If getting traffic from all over the web (1) is not important to you and (2) you are creating a website for a local business and if (3) the majority of your customers are local and (4) you want to market your brand name in a specific area. Use you company name as part of your domain.
Since you are only dealing with local clients, you wouldn't care if "John Smith" from across the world is able to find your site in Google (or the other search engines) since they are highly unlikely to become a customer.
NOTE: Other than a domain name there are other factors weighed by search engines when deciding your ranking. The content on your web pages and your site's popularity (inbound links from other sites) is very important too. However, for maximum results,it wouldn't hurt your search engine ranking if your name is optimized.

More tips on choosing the best domain name for you!
1) Try to avoid registering domain names that are too long and have too many syllables if you can. Even though you are able to registers names up to 63 characters long, you don't have to use all 63 characters.
You want a domain name that is easy to remember. The first time someone visits your page they might not bookmark (or add to favourites) your page, so try to think of a domain name that will be easy to remember.
2) Unless your name that you choose is three short words, use hyphens if your name is more than 3 words long. If the names is readable the way it is, you don't need a hyphen.
3) If possible to protect your name and to deter people from copying your name register multiple extensions (.net, .org, etc.).
You don't have to build a site on all your registered domains. By registering your mulitple extensions, you keep people (copycats) from registering them.
Before you register a name you should decide how long you'll want to reserve it, the longer you reserve your name upfront, the more you'll save. You can register one year at a time, but if you register for multiple years in advance, you can save money in the long run.
Once you have registered your name, you will then select a web host. The web host is the heart of any website because this is where you create and publish your pages, build order forms, add functionality and maintain your site.
