Cultures of Middle-Earth

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In The Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

One ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Forces of Light

Dwarves

Dwarves are four to five feet tall with the male Dwarves long-bearded. They are a stocky, strong and proud race with a resistance to fire and hardier than any other. Dwarves are great miners, craftsmen and work wonders with stone, metals, and jewels.

Dwarves live until around 250 years, marrying around the age of 100. There are substantially fewer Dwarf women than Dwarf men.

They have their own language known as Khuzdul. In war, they use an axe as their weapon of choice.

They enjoy the company of Hobbits.

Gimli represents the dwarves in the Fellowship charged to see about the destruction of the Ring of Power.

Elves

Elves are immortal and do not phisically age. They do not grow weak as they age, only wiser and more beautiful. They typically have fair complexions and coloring, with a few exceptions like Elven Princess Arwen, who was noted for her rare and unusual dark beauty. They are surrounded by a light similar to that of a glowing moon.

They excel in speech, song and poetry. They were the first people on earth to speak with voices and no earthly creatures before them sang. They speak both the Quenya and Sindarin language.

Elves have more beauty than any creatures on earth, but also possess the most extreme happiness and sorrow. In war, Elves can be killed with fire or stell and some have been known to die from grief.

Arwen: Elven Princess in love with Aragorn, daughter of Elrond, grand-daughter of Galadriel.

Elrond holds a council of all races at the Elven city of Rivendell to decide the fate of The Ring of Power. He’s the father of Arwen.

Galadriel is the Elven Queen that gives the Fellowship aid and insight into the journey that lies ahead of them. She is sometimes referred as the “Lady of Light”. Galadriel was the bearer of one of the three Elf rings, Nenya. Nenya’s power enabled the Mirror of Galadriel ot see into the future and also gives Galadriel the power of mind to visualize Sauron’s moves.

Legolas represents the elves in the Fellowship charged to see about the destruction of the Ring of Power. From the forest of Mirkwood, Legolas lends his ability with a bow and arrow to protect Frodo.

Ents

Ents are called the Sheperds of the Trees: treelike in appearance, they primarily reside in Fangorn Forest. Their gathering to discuss important matters are called Ent Moots.

They have slow musical voices and their native language is Entish.

Despite their different ages, they all have the same slow, steady, thoughtful expression.

Treebeard, also known as the “The Eldest”, is the Ent that Merry and Pippin meet in Fangorn Forest and the one who decides the Ents’ participation in the War of Middle-Earth.

Hobbits

Hobbits have pointed ears, curly hair, oversized feet and they never wear shoes. Their height ranges between two and four feet tall.

Some Hobbits have lived as long as 130 years, and their average life span is 100 years. 33 years old, the age of Frodo Baggins, is considered "Coming of Age" to adulthood.

They love to eat (six substantial meals a day), brew ale, smoke pipe weed, and garden in the Shire where they live.

Hobbits discourage excessive or adventurous behavior which is why many were surprised that Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin went on such an adventure as told in The Lord of the Rings. Hobbits are generally very provincial in nature and are typically untrusting of the outside world.

Hobbits are also called "Little Folk," "Little People," or "Halflings." They speak a dialect of the common speech, Westron.

Frodo Baggins is the bearer of the Ring of Power and member of the Fellowship.

Sam Gamgee is the loyal companion of Frodo and member of the Fellowship.

Peregrin “Pippy” Took is a member of the Fellowship.

Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck is a member of the Fellowship.

Bilbo Baggins was once the Ringbearer himself and he gives the ring to his nephew Frodo.

Horses

The Rohan people also known as the Rohirrim, are known for their horses. The armored helmets of the Riders of Rohan feature flowing horse manes and their reverence to the animals is reflected in the architectures of Edoras.

Shadowfax is Gandalf’s steed in “The Two Towers”. His breed is an Andalusion.

Brego is Aragorn’s horse in “The Two Towers”. The horse is named after the Second King of Rohan.

Humans

Men are mortal and bred more quickly than any other race besides the evil Orcs.  Men are subject to age, disease and the rough elements of Middle-earth.

Men are not perceptive to the minds of others, can not see into the future and are less skilled in lore and crafts than other races. They are considered weak compared to the immortal Elves.

Men are a very diverse race. Physically they come in all shapes and sizes and inhabit many different parts of Middle-earth.

Hobbits call Men "Big Folk" or "Big People."

Throughout the ages of Middle-earth, Men rose and eventually became the dominant race.

Aragorn is the first man to join the Hobbits on their journey to return The Ring of Power to the fires of Mount Doom. He was raised by Elves and he’s in love with the Elven Princess Arwen.

Boromir is the eldest son to Denethor of Gondor. He’s a member of the Fellowship.

Denethor is the steward of Gondor and father of Boromir and Faramir.

Eomer is the nephew of Théoden and he is a Rider of Rohan.

Eowyn is Eomer’s sister. She is also called “The White Lady of Rohan”. In love with Aragorn, she will fight and kill the Witchking of Angmar. At the Houses of Healing she will meet Faramir and after Sauron’s defeat she will marry the Gondorian.

Faramir is the youngest son to Denethor. Brother of Boromir, he’ll marry Eowyn of Rohan.

Grima Wormtongue was Théoden’s counsellor. After his betrayal is unveiled, he will help Saruman.

Théoden is the King of Rohan. After Gandalf freed him from Saruman’s control, he led his people to war.

Wizards

Five wizards were sent to Middle-earth to serve as advisors to oppose evil. They possess great powers of body and mind. Wizards use staffs as a means to conduct their power and will.

A wizard's appearance resembles that of an old man, although they age slowly and are actually physically vigorous.

Each Wizard has his own color and grade. White being the highest in their order and Grey the next level in power and wisdom.

Wizards are forbidden to dominate those in Middle-earth and match Sauron's power. However, Saruman disobeys this rule and joined forces with evil.

Gandalf initiated the Quest of the Ring and is a member of the Fellowship.

Forces of Darkness

Orcs

Orcs are fierce warriors. Orc blood is black in color and they are cannibals. Orcs have a hideous physical appearance. They are hunched, bow-legged, and their skin charred. Often their teeth are fanged.

Orcs are soldiers of Sauron and when in battle fight using scimitars, poisoned daggers, arrows, and broad-headed swords. Their armor is chain mail and steel-plate with dangerous jagged helmets.

Orcs are the size of small Men and weaken in sunlight.

Ringwraiths

The terrifying Ringwraiths were once powerful kings and sorcerers among Men until they were tempted by the power of the Ring and damned to serve Sauron.

Ringwraiths wear black hooded cloaks and travel on horseback.

The nine Ringwraiths, also known as Nazgul or Black Riders, are ordered by their master, Sauron to find the ring and bring it back to him.

The Leader of the Ringwraiths is known as the Witch-King.

As with others corrupted by the ring, Ringwraiths are invisible to normal eyes and can only be seen because of their clothing.

Ringwraiths have a keen sense of smell and extremely poor vision.

Uruk-hai

Saruman was not completely pleased with Sauron’s Orc soldiers, so he bred new Orc creatures called Uruk-hai

Uruk-hai are as tall as the tallest Men, black-skinned and black-blooded. They are larger, stronger and fiercer in battle than Men, as their only objective is to kill.

Uruk-hai do not weaken in sunlight.

When in battle, the Uruk-hai sometimes wear black armor and carried straight swords and poisoned arrows, and spears. They are also marked on their faces or bodies by the White Hand of Saruman.

Saruman has joined with Sauron to oppose the Fellowship and reclaim the Ring of Power.
