Knit fabric has always fascinated me. Even when I was a small child, I would trace my finger along a strand of yarn in a sweater, and try to figure out what made knitting work.

I found a "how to knit" section in my Girl Scouts' Handbook, and using some yarn I found somewhere and a pair of coloured pencils (I didn't have knitting needles), I taught myself the knit stitch. But there are two stitches in knitting - and the mysteries of the purl stitch would not be revealed to me for a few years.

Once when my grandmother was visiting, she was making a throw blanket. I asked her to teach me how to make one, and she gave me a copy of the pattern and a set of needles. She taught me the purl stitch and how to read a pattern.

That was many, many years ago, and I have barely stopped knitting since. I knit on the streetcar. I knit waiting in line at the bank. I knit while watching TV. I knit at the movie theatre. I don't knit at concerts or live theatre — that's rude. But I do knit during intermission.
