Penalty Kill

  • In the diagram at left, we are the blue dots and they are the green dots.
  • This would be a typical snapshot of killing a penalty in our zone.
  • Our team will form a box as shown, each player at a corner.
  • Generally, one of their players will be in the middle of the box, with the other four looking for an opening between our players.
  • It's important not to be too aggressive so that you don't get pulled out of position.

  • In the above four diagrams, the black dot represents the offensive player with the puck, the purple dot represents the offensive player farthest from the puck carrier.
  • Notice how the box moves as a solid unit, as the puck moves around the ice surface.
  • Since the purple player is the farthest from the puck carrier, she is less of a threat than the other 4 players on the ice.  So you don't have to check her too closely, momentarily.  It would be extremely difficult for the puck carrier to get the puck directly to the purple player.
  • When you are killing a penalty, you can think of yourself as being connected to your 3 team mates by ropes, such that if one of you wants to move, all 4 of you have to move in unison, maintaining the shape of a box.

  • In the diagram at left, the puck is near their blue line.
  • If we get the puck out of our end, you have to be careful not to be too aggressive.
  • One of the forwards will go up the ice to harass the puck carrier, while the other forward will stay back a bit to cover the middle of the ice.
  • The important thing here is that if one forward moves to her right, the other forward will move to her left.  This will make it easy to re-form the box.
  • Also, the defence will always keep everyone in front of them, AS THEY ALWAYS DO.

Notes:
  • When the penalty is over, the player coming on to the ice surface will assume the position of CENTRE.
  • If a D gets a penalty, the other D's will still play on the penalty kill.  The coach will decide which forwards will kill the penalty.
  • If a Forward gets a penalty, the coach will decide which forwards will kill the penalty, such that we can get back to normal lineups ASAP.
  • Each penalty kill will have 2 Defence and 2 Forwards on the ice.
