Meeting for the First and Last Time...

How do I tell the story of a Grandmother and Grandaughter meeting for the very first time. It's a sad story to tell but also one that brings me a smile. A time in my life I will never forget, even though it took place 19 years ago was on May 14th. This story begins looking forward to having my mother come out to be with me for the birth of my first child, but God had other plans.

So as time went on and the day approached it was apparent that my mother would not be there as intended. This made me very sad. You see my mother ended up in the hospital due to complications from diabetis. During this time I was taken to the hospital due to complications from pregnancy. It was too early for the baby to be born as she was only 34 weeks along. As the week went on my mother's health worsened and I went into labor... now 35 weeks along but the new life inside wanted to arrive. I was taken to have a c-section and gave birth to a daughter of my own. She was a little thing,, 5 lbs 10 oz., but she was healthy.

Well as the days passed, the doctors in one province phoned the doctors in another province 2000 miles away to let them know that my mother who was now a grandmother to a little girl had only 2-24 hours to live...  But God had other plans.

Days passed and the daughter and the grandaughter were able to leave the hospital. The new little girl was now going to take the journey to see her Grandmother. Doctors couldn't explain why the Grandmother was still with us.. but she had a strong heart that kept going...
she was waiting.... she knew of God's plan..

When the little girl was 8 days old, she boarded a plane for her journey. Since her Grandmother couldn't come to her, she was going to her Grandmother. When we arrived at the hospital, we went in to see my mother. She wouldn't look at the little girl. My mother laid there with her eyes closed and would not open them. After leaving the room I was told I couldn't bring my daughter into the room again. I didn't like this very much so after some talking they allowed me to bring my daughter to the room again. The doctors now thought my mother was holding on to see her little grandaughter.

The little girl was now 10 days old.. It was May 14th, 1983. My daughter and I entered the room together and approached the bed where the Grandmother lay. I took my mother's hand and cried knowing it would be the last time. The mother who was now the Grandmother to this little girl opened her eyes and squeezed my hand. She then looked at her Grandaughter and her new little Grandaugher looked at her. They stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity.. my mother and her Grandaughter... their eyes fixed on each other while I held my mother's hand. She then closed her eyes again...

In the early morning of May 15th, 1983 the Grandmother who was my mother passed away. The plan God had was for her to meet her Grandaughter.. it wasn't the way I the mother of the little girl would have wanted it but I cherish this memory of my mother always. She was the type of woman who always gave of herself.. always had a smile no matter how she felt. Her heart was strong right to the end. She was holding on to see her new little Grandaughter for the first and last time, and she gave me a gift of a beautiful memory that will stay with me always....
