Jeanne Le Ber, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun

Forensic dentistry may be usued to address questions of historic interest. The famous and the infamous have been identified by dental means.  Some are victims while others are the perpetrators of atrocities.  A few are saints or prospective saints.  Jeanne Le Ber falls into the latter category.

Jeanne Le Ber resided as the “recluse of Ville-Marie” for 20 years with the Congregation of Notre-Dame, a religious order founded by Marguerite Bourgeoys.

Born of wealthy parents in 1662, she died in 1714 at the age of 52.  Her godfather was the founder of Ville-Marie (1642), later known as the City of Montreal, Sieur Louis de Maisonneuve and her godmother, Jeanne Mance, founded the city’s first hospital.

Le Ber was being proposed for “sainthood” by the Catholic church.   Identification of her remains was an issue since they had been moved to different cemeteries over the centuries.  On November 27, 1991 the remains were examined by forensic experts in anthropology, dentistry and pathology.

“Notching” of the upper and of the lower central incisors (see photo above) was observed.  This occupational stress marker (OSM) is consistent with the use of a threading needle.  Le Ber spent her days praying and in sewing garments for the clergy.

The skeletal remains were consistent with those of a 52 year old female.  Coupled with other observations, it was declared that the remains were those of Jeanne Le Ber.

The Catholic Church is continuing the process of “beatification,” a step towards declaring Jeanne Le Ber a saint.  Her remains are currently inhumed in a chapel at the Mother house of the Congregation of Notre-Dame in Westmont, Quebec.

Forensic dentistry also raises the issue of whether a proper identification has been made.
