Most likely William Penny and so many others like him, merchant and naval mariners, attained their sea-legs in Newfoundland – certainly not in the river Stur. And we rarely think of shipwrights as traveling tradesmen, but rather picture them as being stationed in some dockyard]. Chart compiled from William Penny’s will and from other research:

Quaker Certificate of Marriage 11 September 1817 Between George Penney of Poole, co. Dorset, merchant, son of George Penney of Poole, merchant, decd., and Katherine, his wife and Sarah Horne of Arundel, sau. of Robert Horne of Arundel, miller, decd., and Elizabeth, his wife. XXXX Penney family of Poole, Dorset The family were merchants and shipowners in Poole until 1852, when Robert Horne Penney (1822 - 1902) took over the shipping business of his cousin, and subsequently father-in-law, Edward Lucas (1803 - 1874), in Southwick. Robert Horne Penney's brother George Penney remained in Poole. The family were long standing Quakers, and Robert Horne Penney, his father George Penney and brothers all held senior positions in the Poole Monthly Meeting of Friends. His sisters, however, joined the Congregational Church in the 1840s. The Penney, Lucas, Rickman and other related families were of longstanding Quaker connections. In Poole, the Penneys attended the Poole and Southampton Monthly Meeting, while the Sussex branch were members of the Lewes and Chichester Monthly Meeting. Individual members took on specific responsibilities within the Society of Friends; for instance George Penney (1783 - 1853) was for many years Treasurer of the Dorset Cash Committee, and several, including George Penney and his sons, George Robert and Robert Horne Penney, acted as trustees for Society property (i.e. meeting houses and burial grounds), and charities. The Kemp and Rickman families were part of the Penney-Lucas circle of Quaker families who had intermarried very frequently. Rachel and Matilda Rickman were sisters of Edward Lucas' wife Benjamina, and Susannah Kemp (1793 - 1882) was the sister of Sarah Penney (nee Horne) (1794 - 1857), wife of George Penney of Poole (1783 - 1853) and mother of Robert Horne Penney (1822 - 1902); Susannah married Grover Kemp (1792 - 1869) whose mother was a Rickman and whose sister Benjamina (1794 - 1867) married George Penney's brother Richard (1793 - 1835). XXXX Robert Horne Penney, who moved to Southwick in 1852 to continue Edward Lucas' business there, came originally from Poole, co. Dorset. The Penney family had been merchants and shipowners in Poole from the mid-eighteenth century, and Robert Horne's brothers George Robert (1818 - 1889) and Edward (1824 - 1893), and sisters Catherine (1820 - 1903), Elizabeth Horne (1824 - 1913) and Mary (1826 - 1910) remained in Poole, with a third brother, Harrison (1827 - 1888) settling in Darlington as a printer.
Penny/Penney at Shaftesbury, Dorset: Note made Sep 1994: Thomas Pinney who married Charlotte Gatehouse on 18 Jun 1848 at Shaftesbury, Dorset, was the son of John and Lydia Pinney. Penny/Penney in Somerset: Trinity, Newfoundland marriage: 1808 (Nov) 24 - married John Penny of the parish of Evenitch* in the county of Somerset in Great Britain and (blank) Snook of New Perlican in this district. [TC Note – this is Evercreech, Somerset]. Dec 1992- New IGI- Somerset: Eleanor Penny = John Davis 10 Oct 1636 Maperton or Shepton Mallet- This marriage is listed for two different places- or is Maperton within Shepton Mallet. IGI FEB 1993: Evercreech, Somerset. Elinor Penny of John Penny & Jone Hayse 0 Mar 1605. John Peny = Jone Hayse 28 Nov 1588. John Penny of William Penny & Izable Haise 24 Dec 1561. Willm Peny = Izable Haise 07 Dec Jul 1560. Willm Peny = Edith Ffrye 20/30? Jan 1541. William Penny of Wm & Edith 1542. Penny/Penney in Stalbridge-Henstridge area Dorset & Somerset. Dec 1994 from Ted Jones, Australia: STAL.002 May, 1993; Elizabeth Penny, I sure got her mixed up marrying the wrong John Hobbs, but as I am slowly checking each entry that I make, in the New Pedigree, I have to check and recheck everything! Elizabeth Penny, lived in the Henstridge, Somerset Parish, in 1736, at Henstridge, there is no entry in the P.R., stating that John came from another Parish, which was then Common Practice. John's Pedigree, is contained on Code, PED.8A, here you will see, that after, John, and his brothers, James and William, married, they evidently left Henstridge, for at this period of time, in this part of England, there was drought and famine and many families moved away! Now, we go back to Code, STAL.001, here we find that John Hobbs, was buried, 6 October, 1782, he was 80 years of age, this date was recorded in the Stalbridge Parish Register, also there was no reference to John marrying a Elizabeth! [TC Note- John of Stalbridge born 1702, John of Henstridge, son of James born 1715!]. However, I did find that on 16 June, 1742, John and Elizabeth had their son, Thomas, baptised. [TC Note- This is Thomas of Thomas!!]. 4-6-1744, Mary, dau of John & Elizabeth, baptised. 5-2-1746, Betty, dau of John & Elizabeth, baptised. 5-2-1746, Elizabeth, wife of John buried. It must have been a sad day, we still have some facts missing, about their life together, but at least I have sorted out the Pedigree! Penny/Penney from Christchurch, Hants. to Newfoundland: William Penney from Christchurch, Hants. to Freshwater, Carbonear, Newfoundland:
Three of the children of Robert (Robin) Joyce and Mary Sparkes were baptized by the Methodist minister Rev McDowell on 26 Jan 1812 namely Eliz b 1799, George b 1801 Wm b 1806, and their half brother Thomas Penney - after Mary, a widow, was remarried to Wm Penney of Christchurch in Nov 1810. However Patience (Patia) was baptized by Rev McDowell on 25 Jan 1810 but no birth date is given with the baptism record. It seems curious that she was baptized at that time while the other - presumably older - children were not. Penny/Penney of Wimborne Minster, Dorset to Keels, Newfoundland: Penny/Penney from Wimborne Minster, Dorset to Keels, Newfoundland:
Also from Wimborne Minster, Dorset OV accounts: 1802/3 Cloaths for Joshua Penny’s Boy and William Wheeler going to Newfoundland (£10-1). Christened on the same day 23 Jan 1796 in Wimborne Minster, Dorset, William & Charles Penny, son of Joshua Penny. This seems awfully young to have been apprenticed but they could have been late baptisms. John Penny's epitaph in the Wimborne Minster cemetery, Dorset, England: Reader if cash thou art In want of any Dig 4 feet deep And thou wilt find a Penny. It also states he captained his first ship after he was mustered out of the Royal Navy in 1918. XXXX Your reference to Andrew Horwood's book Nfld. Ships and Men" references George Penney jr. better known as George Fred Martin. While most of that information is correct George Fred was not named after his father but was named after his uncle. His father went by the name of Fred and as far as I can establish was actually named Edward Frederick. Andrew Horwood's mother was a Burke. She was the sister of Captain Samuel Burke who was the Captain of the "Lady May". The Lady May was lost off Cape St. Mary's on a return trip from P.E.I. on January 5, 1896.The crew of the Lady May consisted of Captain Samuel Burke, first mate James Burke (brother of Samuel), William Moores and two brothers George and Fred Penney. This George Penney had only one son named Samuel (my grandfather). Fred Penney the brother of George had two sons, Harold and George Fred, and their mother did marry Charles Martin after the death of her husband. Ron Penney 1827 Charles Penny, Carbonear, land petitioner. "The Carbonear Star and Conception Bay Advertiser , 1833" Wednesday, May 29 It is our melancholy task this week to record a most awful accident which occurred in this place on Friday last. A young man named Richard PENNY, accompanied with others, rowed from the North side to the South side of the harbour, for the purpose of getting a boat load of boughs. On arriving at the South Side the deceased left the boat to make her fast. He had landed but a few moments, when a large piece of ice fell from the side of a cliff on his head and killed him instantly. The young man was only 20 years of age, and bore an excellent character for sobriety and good conduct. His loss will be severely felt by his family. Wednesday December 11 Married by Rev. J. C.
