OVERSEERS OF THE POOR Mrs Miller in Placentia, Newfoundland 1727. (TC Note - probably related to Gov. Samuel Gledhill), From: B. Pederson Subject: A few men active in the 1770s fisheries at Exploits Date: Thu, 28 May 98 The following notes are from "River Lords, Father and Son" (1987) by Amy Louise Peyton, ISBN 0-920502-73-3: Around 1770, "Harry Miller, a native of Wimbourne, near Christchurch, England, had been living at Fogo, and carrying on a cod fishery. Thomas Taylor became Miller's boss on the Exploits River. Jack Hooper, a deaf mute. was an apprentice and a brother to William Hooper, apprenticed to Matthew Ward of New Bay." It goes on to say, Harry Miller "had several salmon stations on the Great Rattling Brook tended by Richard Richmond, Nicholas Eton and James Lily. William Richmond, a brother of Richard, fished at another of Miller's salmon stations. William Cull also fished and trapped for Miller. Pike (believed to have been James Pike) operated Miller's cooperage...". It continues, "Other men apprenticed to and employed by Miller were John Morris, Matthew Hugster, Maurice Cull, James Green, James Bown, John Day, John Boles, Humphrey Coles, John Snelgrove.." XXXX from the 1987 book titled "RIVER LORDS" 1747-1775 abt. "Around 1775, .....Harry MILLER took into partnership a younger Englishman who was a native of his home town in Wimborne. His name was John PEYTON.page 16-19."John PEYTON (later to be referred to as 'John the Elder'.was 23 yrs of age when he made his first journey to the New World in 1770....Harry MILLER's will dated Nov. 21st, 1775 records the names of John PEATON [sic] and James BOWN witnessed by John IRISH and Thomas TAYLOR. Date: Wed, 25 Mar 98 I have a problem with my Hutchings family tree. I have gone back to James Hutchings (of Spaniard's Bay, CB) 1756 born Devon/Dorset England. He and his wife Elizabeth Ann Miller (born Bonaventure, TB) 1757 had 3 boys & 3 girls. Now my problem begins It shows in records where 2 of the sons had a son named Solomon Hutchings 1813 and that both Solomon Hutchings 1813 had a wife. I have a real question about this and am wondering where I could find out any more info without coming in person to NFLD. I need to know the father of Solomon, was there really 2 Solomon's If there was only one which I suspect then the other wife and children are a second family. I really need to know Solomon's father to settle this question. I would like some help from someone to give me some idea of where to search next. What I do have was done in Saint John's by a family member many years ago and by talking to family members. Help would be appreciated. Thank You James HUTCHINGS, born about 1756 in Broadwinsor, Dorset, England. Evidently, he came to the Spaniard's Bay area abt.1775 and married Elizabeth MILLER (daughter of Samuel) on 13 February 1778. [TC Note – born about 1570]. [TC Note - The above "Miller of Poole" notations, presented to me as ancestors of Jane Miller who married Thomas Crew, were repeats of research from the 1930s as follows:] From the G. Ward Kemp book titled Kemps of Ollantigh and Kemps of Poole , published Seattle, Washington in May 1939 referring to the MILLER family of Poole, Dorset. G. Ward Kemp recieved his information from an Ethel Waters, she recieved the information via William Berry and the Harleian Society.
[TC Note - Neither Dr. Richard Miller nor his sister Jane Miller are descendants of this Nicholas Miller - they are children of William Miller, the apothecary in Poole, Dorset; most statements made here re: Dr. Richard Miller are incorrect: Thomas Kemp is a vague reference to Thomas Crew; Elizabeth Budden is in fact Mary Budden - The Miller family information in the Kemp family of Poole books is suspect – wonderful tools to use in genealogy classrooms to teach fallacies]. Thomas CREW and Jane MILLER had the following child:
Jane MILLER daughter of William (the apothecary) & Elizabeth, was born about 1747. She married Thomas CREW in England, Dorset, Poole, 1787. (Caroline Notting, April, 1881). The rapid flight of time reminds me that I should proceed without further delay to add a few more thoughts to what I have already written. My maternal Grandmother (i.e. my mother's mother - Jane Crew) was a Miss Miller. She was quite old when she married, over 40, I believe. She and my Grandfather both lived to be a great age –( 86. Caroline Notting). 143. In 1787 Thomas Crew married Jane Miller, whose brother, Richard, was a trustee of the meeting house (page 72). M.H.G., Poole Parish Records, Coll.24, Box 5, 04-016-40. (See Thomas CREW for the children resulting from this marriage.) Richard MILLER Dr was born in England, Dorset, Poole 0/1744. Richard died 6/12/1802. He married Mary BUDDEN. Richard's occupation: Doctor. Richard was listed as a member of a church in England, Dorset, Poole, 0/1787. In 1787 Thomas Crew married Jane Miller, whose brother, Richard, was a trustee of the meeting house (page 72). (M.H.G., Poole Parish Records, Coll.24, Box 5, 04-016-40.) Kerley's Harbour, Newfoundland, was occupied on a seasonal basis as an outpost of Trinity from the eighteenth century, but permanent settlement likely dates from the early 1800s: tradition has it that the first settlers were Jacob Miller from Poole, England, and John Miller from Bonaventure. The Millers are said to have been the first family to have settled New Bonaventure, which first appears distinct from Old Bonaventure in the records of Trinity parish in 1808 when a child was born to Samuel and Martha Miller of New Bonaventure. White Point and George's Cove were abandoned and used as pasture. Common family names included Hodder, Janes, Locke, McGrath, Miller and Short. Exploits River, Newfoundland: Next on list of settlers is a Mr. Harry MILLER who also carried on a large codfishery at Fogo, where John Peyton the elder first settled on coming to this country. Mr. Miller was also a native of Wimbourne, Christchurch. John Peyton the elder when a young man travelled on the coast of Labrador with, at the time, a Lieut.afterwards Colonel Cartwright and came to this country with that gentleman and it was then that he became acquainted with Mr. MILLER at Fogo. He settled at Fogo and carried on the codfishery there for several years having had some experience with the fisheries at the Channel Islands. Eventually he settled at Exploits River entering into partnership with Mr. Harry MILLER and engaged in the river salmon fishery. [TC Notes] William Miller, Apothecary, makes no mention of the immortality of the soul or any such references to God, as was usually done in that era. He does mention an investment in the Meeting House on Lagland Street, Poole, Dorset. He was twice married as he mentions the late mother of his son William. His daughter Mary appears to have been challenged, either physically or mentally, requiring permanent guardianship. Presumably, with all this inherited medical equipment, William’s son was later the Dr. Richard Miller in Poole dispelling the notion by other researchers that Dr. Richard Miller was a son of Nicholas. William’s daughter, Jane, married Thomas Crew, shipowner and Newfoundland trader. William Miller, apothecary, is mentioned as a brother or kinsman in the will made 1748 of Thomas Miller, Blacksmith. (See Thomas Miller will above). From the 1766 will of William Miller, apothecary, Poole, Dorset:

XXXXXX Family of Richard Miller bn 1744, son of William & Elizabeth, Poole:
XXXXXX Dear Thomas, Would it be possible to send me copies of the MILLER Wills that you have on your web site. I would be very interested to see if they relate to the MILLER family tree. I have attached the Wills of 1. Richard MILLER who was born in 1744 and died 1802 And 2. William MILLER who was born in 1716/7 and died in 1767 Kind Regards Sue in Sydney xxxxx ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bren & Bessie Doyle" <b.bdoyle@nf.sympatico.ca> To: "Thomas R Cole" <colestips@sympatico.ca> Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2004 5:31 PM Subject: Re: [TRINITYBAY] William Russel from Wyke Regis, Dorset > Hi, > I was wondering what your interest in the Miller name would be. > I am researching the Millers of New Bonaventure & surrounding area as my mother was a Miller from NB. I have this marriage for Wm & Martha & some info on them back in Wyke Regis, Dorset, but I'm having a problem finding anything on Martha back here in NL. During my last visit to the Provincial Archives I found a baptism, written in error for sure, but I'm not sure if it's her. It was taken from Vol. 64A, Box 1, of the Alphabetical Index of Baptisms-Trinity District (Church of England) & it read as follows: > Date of Birth: Dec 6, 1816 New Bonaventure. > Parents: Miller, Martha & Mary. > Child: John. > By J. Clinch > This could have been Martha of John & Mary or Mary of John & Martha but I don't have either in my database. > If you find out who her parents were(or anything on her) I would surely appreciate hearing from you. > Bessie (in NL)
