:: Mask #M8 ::
Humans have long been drawn to expressing themselves through masks,
costumes, and roles because we can create distance between ourselves and the
characters/personalities portrayed which we may not want to be associated with
for various reasons. People often find it difficult to accept the taboo or less
desirable qualities within themselves, either because they do not like those aspects
within themselves or, more likely, because society has dictated to them that those
emotions, thoughts, behaviours, or beliefs are unacceptable or unhealthy. These
socially unacceptable aspects of ourselves (likes, dislikes, etc), which we often
keep hidden, need not be extreme, only unattractive or undesirable to the
majority within a society. Many of these unacceptable or uncommonly expressed
aspects exist within all of us and are not harmful when kept in check
(for the most part).
These masks are intended to be interpreted individually by each viewer
depending upon their own reaction to each mask - just as each persons' way of
expressing their own emotions or playing out the different roles within their lives
will vary so will each individuals reaction vary as to whether they like or dislike the
different masks and which one(s) they feel drawn to. Which mask draws the
attention of the viewer and why is it of interest to them.
Is it the beautiful bird mask or the sinister snake mask?
The different colours and treatments of each mask will
influence the way a person interprets the character of/behind the different
masks. Would the viewer honestly admit what draws them towards a particular mask?
Probably not, not if they don't like making waves in a society where their
reasons for liking a particular mask might go against the tide of socially acceptable
ideas and beliefs. But that is the joy people find in masks - it allows you to admire
the attractive yet unpopular, while maintaining deniability.
