Co-operative: Home Options In Childhood Education

C:HOICE Homeschooling support group meetings and information sessions.

Moral support, informational support, and sometimes even legal support, are the kinds of help homeschooling families may find themselves looking for. Families who are just starting to consider homeschooling are also looking for basic information about it. CHOICE will help you find the kind of support and information you need.

Homeschooling support

Whether you're dealing with antagonistic authorities, or you struggle with doubts about your approach to childhood learning, or you just want to brainstorm for new ideas, you'll find moral support and suggestions from other homeschoolers, and can in turn offer the fruit of your own experience to others.

Support groups

Within C:HOICE, support happens informally at the playgroup, but if you want a more focussed discussion of issues, you can attend a parents' support meeting or an information session.

Information and Support Meetings

--------

Parent members* are welcome to call for a support meeting, which is really just getting together to chat and make friends. We may share ideas and concerns about homeschooling, but we may also talk about anything else we're interested in, and just enjoy each other's company.

* (Babies may be present, and teens may attend.)

Online support

C:HOICE members' e-list

Members of C:HOICE are expected to join the c-hoice yahoogroup to stay in the loop about activities, have the opportunity to help plan them, and receive announcements. The e-list also serves as an ongoing line of communication for support. It's important that members feel comfortable with the style of group they're in, so when you sign up to join, please let us know that you've explored the membership pages, understand how the group operates, and are happy to support our consensus-based ways.

Forums

There are several other e-groups and forums available on the web. Here are a few we've heard of:

A Different Drum is a split-off from C:HOICE. It was created as an alternative to the consultation and consensus decision-making of C:HOICE and operates instead as a loose network of independent organizers. As such, its events are open to all homeschoolers, including C:HOICE members. (C:HOICE members should feel free to participate in the events and support available in the wider community of homeschoolers. It is only in terms of being an organizer that membership in C:HOICE means a commitment to channel any initiatives through the C:HOICE group.)

Learn Free Community was created "to support and foster the autodidactic nature within our families. We welcome all independent learners of any age. Homeschoolers, Unschoolers, deschoolers, private schoolers, Home-based educators and others who love learning." Mostly for the London, Ontario area.

Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents: OFTP members have access to several Yahoo e-groups - one for organizational and legal issues, another for sharing ideas and concerns about day to day homeschooling issues, plus some specialized ones like the executive list and the universityproject list.

hs-ca : a Yahoo e-group for sharing ideas and information with other home educators. Very chatty and active, you may find it hard to keep up with and find the kernels of useful information among the personal banter between long-time friends.

CanadianHS : a Yahoo e-group in which to share ideas and experiences about homeschooling in Canada. General discussions welcome and encouraged as well. Not very active at the moment. If yoou join and contribute, it might pick up.

The Alternative Learning Organisation:
A growing, worldwide community network of Natural Learners, Unschoolers, and support groups, linked together by map and e-list. They now have an open forum as well.

Home Educators: Not an organization, but a website intended to create a world-wide community of those interested and involved in home based learning. Includes a forum and articles.

Yahoo groups : do a search for "homeschooling" or "home-based education" or "unschooling" to find other, non-Canadian discussion groups.

Legal support

Legal support is something we hope you never need. Members of C:HOICE can help each other find legal information and assistance by sharing knowledge and referrals. OFTP can refer members who need legal representation to an informed lawyer. See also our Laws and regulations page.
