Homeschool Friends Ontario

Homeschool Friends Ontario is an e-list on Yahoo! Groups. It was created to allow homeschoolers in Ontario to connect with each other family-to-family regardless of what support groups they belong to. Its role is to facilitate the development of friendships among our kids (and among ourselves) by providing an awareness of each other's existence as individuals (i.e. independently of group affiliation) and a way to make first contact. The friendship-building itself, however, happens off-list, real person to real person in the non-virtual world.

Before you ask to join, please review the guidelines for posting messages, below. If you decide this suits you, send an introduction to hs-friends-ON-subscribe@ (add yahoogroups.com to complete the email address) that indicates your understanding of the purpose of the list (i.e. that it's not an online discussion group). Your intro to the group itself (once you are a member) should include your name, location, and the ages of your children, plus any additional information you're willing to make public.

Since the purpose of the group is to allow us to connect one on one as individuals rather than have a group discussion online, by default a reply to any post will go to the person posting, not to the group.

When posting to the whole group, please indicate your CITY/TOWN in the Subject line of your message and post ONLY the following types of messages:

• INTRO: Once your membership takes effect, please post an introduction that includes your name, location and your children's ages, plus any additional information you're willing to make public.
• AFFINITY enquiries: after your intro, you can post again whenever you want to find out if there is anyone else on the list who shares an affinity with you or your kids. (ex: "Are there any other vegans on the list?" or "Are there any other pre-teens who are into sports?")
• PENPAL searches: you don't have to live in the same area to build a friendship. Kids who are looking for penpals or parents looking for support from like-minded others, can post an invitation to correspond with them. Again, be sure what you post is not more revealing of your personal information than is appropriate for internet safety.

Please DO NOT post the following types of messages to the whole group:

• DISCUSSIONS: information, discussions or chatting about homeschooling or life in general can be posted to any of the many online support groups for homeschoolers. See a partial list on the OFTP website.
• ACTIVITIES: to announce or search for field trips and other activities for homeschoolers in Ontario, join the hs-ontrips yahoogroup.
