C:HOICE homeschooling group - members' agreement

CHOICE was created to provide an open, co-operative and respectful environment in which homeschoolers could gather. For it to remain true to its purpose, its members need to maintain that spirit by agreeing to follow certain guidelines.

C:HOICE Members' agreement

We agree to respect the membership and decision-making structure of C:HOICE as outlined below:

  • C:HOICE is not a network of independent organizers but a co-operative of collaborating organizers and participants. (Individuals should not join C:HOICE if they prefer to be independent organizers rather than work within the consensus-based format of C:HOICE.)
  • All members may participate in decision-making about the organization of events and activities (see the Event-Planning Agreement).

  • C:HOICE is not run by an individual leader but by a non-hierarchical team of Full Members.
  • Full Members are those who participate in decision-making about C:HOICE policies and services. Such decisions are made within the boundaries of the foundational principles and practices (see the Mandate and Guiding Principles).
  • Anyone can become a Full Member.

  • Decisions about certain tasks may be delegated to individuals or committees according to the roles they've agreed to take on.

Examples of possible roles include:

  • co-ordinator of a project (event, activity, service)
  • facilitator (e-list, in-person meetings)
  • website manager
  • contact person
  • newsletter editor

We agree to respect the Event-Planning Agreement.

When it comes to the planning of events and activities, we agree to give all members the opportunity to be involved in contributing ideas, participating in discussion and group consultation, volunteering to perform tasks, and being counted in determining consensus. Involvement in the event-planning process is done through the e-list (or by phone, if you have no internet access). (See the Event-Planning Agreement for more details.)

We agree to perform tasks and communicate in a timely way.

We agree to delegate our tasks to others when we're unable to fulfill them in a timely manner. In order not to hold up the consensus process unnecessarily, we agree to voice concerns and comments about proposals within the given timeline (default timeline is 3 days) and to allow the group to proceed without our input if it's not given within that timeframe. When payment for an event is required in advance, we agree to make the payment within the given timeline.

We agree to respect the nature of C:HOICE events and activities.

We agree not to alter the nature of C:HOICE events or activities. We acknowledge that they've been planned by consensus of all involved members, and agree to respect their efforts and decisions.

We agree to respect the privacy of others.

We are aware that the contact list of C:HOICE Members is only given to those who are themselves on the list. We agree to respect each person's privacy by not sharing this personal information with anyone not on the list, unless we have the person's permission to do so.

The c-hoice e-list is a channel of communication intended for C:HOICE members only. We agree to respect the privacy of members and of the group by not forwarding e-list messages to non-members. (Exceptions are announcements of events open to non-members and simple references to resources such as websites of interest.)

When forwarding messages to the extended email list, C:HOICE agrees to follow the privacy policy of addressing the message to recipients as a Blind Copy (BCC) so that the email addresses of all recipients are hidden to all other recipients.

We agree to represent C:HOICE respectfully and responsibly.

We understand that when we're out in the community on a field trip, or at the Children's Museum for the playgroup, or acting as spokesperson for the group, we and our children represent C:HOICE as a group. As the goodwill of the community towards our group depends on the behaviour of our children and ourselves in interaction with that community, we agree to do our best to ensure that that behaviour is appropriate, respectful and responsible. We understand that, in the case of field trips and events, the exact rules of conduct will depend on the kind of setting we're visiting, but may in some cases involve not letting children touch things or run around freely. We agree to take responsibility for getting the co-operation of our own children in respecting whatever rules of conduct are appropriate to the circumstances.

Regardless of how we relate to others outside of the context of our participation in C:HOICE, we agree that, when speaking for the group, or in the context of being part of the group, we will relate to others with a non-adversarial attitude, drawing, if need be, on the guidelines for Effective Group Work.

We agree to resolve conflict with each other and with C:HOICE.

We understand that, within any group, conflict can arise from differences in opinions, differences in personalities, misunderstandings, or issues of collaboration. We agree to maintain a non-adversarial attitude towards those with whom we disagree, openness to hearing concerns, and patience with the consensus-building process.

We understand that the consensus approach to decision-making involves discussions being co-ordinated and mediated by a facilitator rather than led by a chairperson. We agree to respect the facilitator's role in helping us engage in respectful, constructive and caring resolution, as outlined in the e-list communication guidelines and the handout on Effective Group Work.

Outside of group discussion, we agree to resolve conflict person-to-person when appropriate, but to ask for facilitation if we're unable to reach enough of a resolution to feel comfortable in the group. We agree to attend and participate in a C:HOICE resolution process when asked to do so by the facilitator or the group.
