Club History

The Churchbridge Lions club is a member of Lions Clubs International (LCI), the largest service organisation in the world. It is open to all men and women interested in enjoying good fellowship and working together on club and community projects. Since 1978 the Churchbridge Lions Club has been an important part of community spirit and growth. When a need has been identified it is usually the Lions Club that is contacted to see if it can provide a helping hand. From helping a senior citizen rake their lawn in the fall, to spearheading the fundraising for a community facility, the Churchbridge Lions are there, living up to their motto: "We Serve."

Initially formed on January 26, 1978 the Churchbridge Lions Club was officially chartered in April of that year. The charter members were: Charlie Baskin, Deane Baskin, Dwight Baskin, Doug Bjarnason, Gil Boyle, Garnet Burke, Rick Carpenter, Wally Ching, Lorne Gogal, Evan Haubrich, Mel Hicks, Ranald Hrushka, Henry Jenson, Art Just, Jerry Kaeding, Roger Kaeding, Bill Lothian, Ted Magnusson, Charlie McNeil, Vernon Mehls, Don Morash, Ed Morash, Glen Morash, Ivan Morash, Lyle Mund, Jim Nashiem, Howard Pedrick, Martin Rathgeber, Ray Shaw, Francis Siu, Ray Thies, Arnold Weir, Walter Wintonyk and Wayne Wowk.On 27 June 2002 the Churchbridge Lioness Club joined the Churchbridge Lions Club and formed the Chruchbridge Lioness Branch of the Churchbridge Lions Club. For more branch information go to the Lioness page.

Since formation the Churchbridge Lions Club raised funds to support many community projects such as the local arena, swimming pool, curling club, sports grounds, high school, Students Against Drinking and Driving (SADD), elementary school, summer reading assistance program, Block Parents, dance club, War Memorial, figure skating club, hockey teams, baseball teams, curling teams, art club, seniors manor, Evergreen Club, and financial assistance to residents to help with medical expenses. A project the club is also very proud of being involved with is the sponsorship of the Lions Quest program in the town's elementary school. The goal of the program is to help young people make wise, informed choices, particularly when it comes to dealing with drugs, alcohol and peer pressure. The club has had several projects throughout the years including its annual Santa Claus Day and Canada Day. We have also provided assistance to the Lioness branch with their Halloween Dance, Ladies Night Out, Senior’s Supper, and Fall Craft Show.

National and provincial support has been given to many organisations including: Tabs for Tots, Lions Cavalcade for Diabetes, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), Lions Foundation of Canada (LFC) Dog guides (disabilities, hearing and sight), Lions Eye Bank, Teen support groups, Potashville Music Festival, Regional Health District, Easter Seals, eyeglasses and hearing aides collection.

Internationally through donations to LCIF(Lions Clubs Intenational Foundation), we bring disaster assistance to those in need throughout the world from earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes, disease, and famine. Services such as medical clinics, emergency medical supplies, food, water, emergency shelter, new schools, hospitals, homes and community centres have been provided to many devastated areas.

To date the Lions have raised over $350,000 through the generous support of Churchbridge and area residents and businesses.
