1. Introduction: Sean Clare introduced the CUG meeting with a brief synopsis of today’s meeting.

Introduction of new participants to the meeting.

2. Duminda Perera and Rob Dunn from de Havilland CAD/CAM department, presented CATIA SOLIDS
Best Practices. A handout was provided.

a. Solid Creation Tips – A presentation of slides and demo to create a solid machined part. The designed
part was created in a way that it would be easily manufactured, understanding the requirements of the
NC group. Tips such as keeping all construction geometry on one plane, and using associativity
whenever possible were presented.

b. Solid Modification – use of the Part Editor window and its icons, continued with examples of using
SOLIDE+MODIFY+GEOMETRY+PARM
SOLIDE+MODIFY+GEOMETRY+MOVE
SOLIDE+MODIFY+GEOMETRY+CONTOUR
A demo was provided showing the application of the various modifications available within the
SOLIDE function, including applying parametrics to contours after the part is made.

3. Eleu Um from Multimatic Technical Centre provided an update of the COE in October.

a. Discussion of the various sessions available at COE
b. General structure of the conference included: main sessions, breakout sessions, DPCs, workshops,
academy
c. CATIA V5 was discussed
d. Native NT or UNIX, windows style interface
e. Surfacing from 2D sketch, click and drag surface modification
f. Kinematics using click and drag, design of relationships from assembly of parts
g. Solids, dynamic sketcher like construction, multi-model solids
h. PUBLISH and IMPORT – reduces file size and allows easier and intuitive update for downstream
applications
i. Solids updates/improvements 4.1.9 – Trim Assistant, TRANSFOR with various options
j. Solids updates/improvements 4.2.0 – MSEL icon in CSG tree, modify option in contextual menu in
CSG tree, improved filleting (especially when crossing face boundaries)
k. Next COE in Nashville, April 1999

4. CATIA Users group name and LOGO – Dustin Soulliere and Cindy Carr

The name of the group to be: CATIA Users of Central Ontario
11 different graphic logos narrowed down to four styles (see attached).

5. General Discussion

a.    PARAM3D or Dynamic Sketcher can be used to maintain contour parameters

b.     Frame Ball for text: Use TEXTD2+CREATE+TEXT+SIMPLE, and select from a list of frames to find
appropriate size (if one exists in standard).

c. Dimensions after update are still highlighted in red. Dimensions may not have been created to draw
geometry, such as a point. Check the standards set in AUXVIEW2 which have the tolerances to select
geometry.

d. AUXVIEW2 can be used for transparent views, and with 4.2.0 the quickdraw function can be used to
create all views with a simple update.

e. Link from metric part to inch part. CATUNIT on OFFSET and THICK does not convert dimensions.

f. Update of 4.1.9 models into 4.2.0 that have been created using MERGE function crashes. Must use
/CLN prior to update.

g. In 4.1.9 merge models individually to copy geometry rather than loading passive models and using the
function MODELS+COPY which uses a lot of memory.

h. SKIN function can be used to create all surfaces just in one function (similar to Sketcher). Saves time
by not having to move from one to another function. CSG similar applicability as per SOLIDE
function.

i. Creating draw geometry using AUXVIEW from passive models. An error occurs when the proper
model has not been opened. By creating the views using AUXVIEW2, the links will update when
views are updated.

j. SOLIDE update and checking links? A multi-check link is desired.

k. Multi-erase of a various sets. Use SETS+DELETE

l. Screen grab of analysis window. Set up PrintScrn key, use xv, or download free imageview software
from RS6000 web site.

6. Topics of interest include:

a. managing assemblies and models
b. more Solids tips, including metric to inch conversion
c. SKIN function (surfaces with history)
d. PARAM3D and Dynamic Sketcher
e. Advanced surfaces - SURF2
f. CATIA Administration
g. 4.1.9 – 4.2.0 update and Demo
h. Translation capabilities
i. AUXVIEW2 tips
j. V5 Demo
