Meeting Minutes - June 18, 1998

 1. Introduction and welcome by Sean Clare. The directives of the CATIA users group was reinforced including the sharing of knowledge, exchange of ideas, and learning of new CATIA techniques and applications.

2. Sunny Zhu, AE of IBM presented CATWeb V 2.01

  • Initial slide presentation of CATWeb applications and uses.
  • Included flow chart of hardware requirements & company connection requirements.
Company Side

To print --> define server, client

CATWeb Demo

3. Soumen Sarkar of DBM Systems Inc. Presented a CATIA 4.1.9 update.

CATIA SOLIDE

  • Fillet - tritangent
  • Union - remove, keep, trim assistant
  • Prism - next or last; for selection of depth
  • Draft - reflect curve
  • Mirror - Symmetry
  • Multimodel environment - work using concurrent engineering methods
4. Hot Tips

a. IGES Translation: (improves the accuracy of the translation to 13 significant figures instead of 6)

  1. Find all instances of the file called igesinp.data ( Hint: type: find / -name igesinp.data -print)

  2. *Delete all but the one in /usr/lpp/iges/prog

  3. Edit the file to look like the following:
* SAMPLE OPTION FILE FOR IGES BASE PRODUCT

START SEE IGES PROCESSOR PROGRAMMERS' REFERENCE

AND OPERATIONS

START MANUAL FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF USER OPTIONS

START
START
SIGFIG CORD 13
SIGFIG COEF 13
PRINT ALL
MAXERR 0
IIFPOR NO
IBMIDE YES
BPSUPPRESS NO

Note: change the "SIGFIG CORD and COEF" value to 13, then exit and save the file.

3) Login as catadm and run: "catuiif" *This will relink the iges processor to CATIA.

End of procedure

b. Utilities - string - text disappears
Fix minimize CATIA and refresh, text returns.

c. D.F. to AutoCAD
rename and place extension, large tolerance

d. IGES using CATMOD Utility

  • CURVE APPROXIM - reduce degree of polynomial curves to 3. The term "degree" refers to the max. order of degree of polynomial expression used to define the curve or surface (ie 2 is a second order, 3 is a third order polynomial etc.) So y=X^5 +2X^4 +X^3 + 2X^2 +X would be a 5 degree ( 5th order polynomial expression)
  • remove constrained curves & cleanup models
  • B-Spline option for surfaces
5. New Business

Topics for future meetings include

  1. ASSEMBLY Module, including animation and interference checking
  2. Supplier connections to large companies, communicate and receive data via CDM, AutoWeb (CCX) etc.
  3. Large zoom with spaceballs
  4. GPS, GPO, GPD - Finite Element Analysis modules
  5. STEP
  6. IGES - best practices
Discussed communication methods via Internet or web page to track questions and answers, most members agreed that for now the best method of communication is through e-mail. Meeting minutes will be posted on IBM’s web site at http:/www.can.ibm.com/mfg/engineeringsolutions/user_group.html

Meet with CAD Systems magazine to discuss articles introducing the group.

Next meeting at IBM, September 14, 1998, 1 PM (tentative date and time)
