There are three different levels of commitment in the 26th Field Pipes & Drums. Interested persons are more than welcome to join us in any (or all) of these roles.
Reservist:
As active members of the CF (Canadian Forces) Reserve (i.e. "The Militia"), reservists have all passed basic military training. Presently, this course is called BMQ (Basic Military Qualification) and lasts for ten weeks. Recruits are taught a range of military skills such as drill, navigation, weapons training and physical fitness. Once BMQ is completed, members join the band as part of the 26th Field Regiment's Headquarters & Service Battery (photo). In addition to their band duties, reserve pipers and drummers take part in field exercises. As members of the Headquarters and Service Battery, it is their role to support the guns.
Being a Reserve Member requires the highest amount of time and commitment. However, it also means that you get paid for all your hard work. For details on wages, and other benefits, visit the 38 Brigade Group Website. The regular wages and summer employment opportunities mean that the CF Reserve can be an excellent part-time job for students. The CF has even recently implemented an Education Reimbursement Program. Reserve band members have the opportunity for summer employment obtaining their musical qualifications at CFB Borden.
For more information, e-mail the Band Officer, Warrant Officer A. Dunham.
Volunteer:
Not everyone has the time or inclination to be in the Canadian Forces Reserve. With this in mind, the band is open to civilians. While not members of the military, volunteers are considered to be full members of the Pipe Band. As such, they serve the 26th Field Regiment at a various mess functions and military parades (photo). In return, volunteers are provided with transportation and lodgings on band trips. Drummers are provided with instruments. All volunteer members are provided with a uniform, music, and various other sundry items such as reeds, seasoning, drumheads and sticks.
For more information, e-mail the Band Officer, Warrant Officer A. Dunham.
Westman Pipes & Drums:
This is a partnership between the local Shrine band and the 26th Field. Essentially a street band, the Westman Pipes & Drums plays at a variety of different community events throughout Western Manitoba and North Dakota. Our repertoire consists of such standard favourites as “Scotland the Brave,” “Bonnie Dundee,” and “The Green Hills of Tyrol.” We hold Westman Pipe Band practices once per month. Gigs occur throughout the year, but summer is definitely our busiest time. Members of the Westman Pipe Band do not have to belong to either the Shrine or the Military. All you have to do is show up at practice once per month.
For more information, e-mail the Band President, B.Chamberlain.
